How Cozaar works:

Cozaar belongs to a class of drugs known as angiotensin receptor blockers. Angiotensin receptor blockers are medicines that block the action of a substance called angiotensin. Angiotensin is a hormone that causes blood vessels to dilate and relax. This helps blood vessels to open and blood that needs to flow back into the lungs. Angiotensin receptors are found in the walls of blood vessels that supply blood to the lungs. Cozaar works by blocking the action of a substance called angiotensin receptor type 1. This receptor type 1 is located in the area under the skin called the aorta. Angiotensin receptors are present in the smooth muscle cells of the heart and blood vessels in the lungs. Angiotensin receptors are also found in the skin, kidneys, and other tissues of the body. Angiotensin receptors are not found in the stomach, intestines, skin, bones, joints, and other tissues of the body. Angiotensin receptors are located in the blood vessels of the kidneys and the liver. Angiotensin receptors are also found in the heart.

Los Angeles, CA | December 24, 2019 | News Highlights

LOS ANGELES — In a move that has not been met with approval by many, the U. S. Food and Drug Administration has issued a warning that the drug Cozaar, prescribed as a diuretic, can cause serious side effects.

The FDA is currently working with several different agencies to develop a new drug to prevent the development of heart-related conditions such as heart failure, liver disease and stroke.

“This is a matter of public record,” said Dr. David K. Johnson, director of the Food and Drug Administration’s Office of Drug Evaluation and Research.

“We know the drug will have side effects and that it will probably never be approved.”

The FDA has previously issued a warning in 2014 that the drug has a higher risk of side effects than the usual approved dosage for the condition. The agency has also warned the drug’s manufacturers about potential drug interactions.

“We’re aware that this is an issue with the drug,” said Dr. Mark L. Hlatky, director of the FDA’s Office of Scientific Investigation.

The FDA issued a statement Wednesday saying the drug has been linked to a rare type of rare inherited eye disease known as retinal vascular disease. The condition affects middle-aged men, older women and women with heart disease.

“The FDA is aware of the risk of heart attack, stroke and death associated with Cozaar and is working with our partners to develop more effective and safer drugs for the prevention and treatment of these serious conditions,” said FDA Commissioner William J. Merrell Jr. in a press release.

“The safety profile of the drug and the long-term risks it may cause will be discussed during the final review,” the FDA stated.

Dr. Lambert E. Johnson, director of the FDA’s Office of Food and Drug Control, said the FDA has not approved the drug or the drug’s manufacturer to sell it.

“We’ve been working with other agencies and other partners to get FDA to approve a new drug that is safe and effective for long-term use,” said Dr. Johnson, director of the Office of Medical Products in the FDA’s Center for Drug Evaluation and Research.

The drug is sold as Cozaar, and the drug is available in three strengths: 25mg, 50mg and 100mg. The FDA has not yet approved the drug, but it has not been approved by the agency yet.

“The drug was approved by the FDA for the treatment of hypertension,” Dr. K. J. Hlatky said.

The FDA issued a warning letter in 2014, the agency said, citing concerns about the risk of heart disease and stroke and the effects it has on the cardiovascular system.

“While the drug may be used to prevent certain heart conditions, we’re concerned that it may be used to treat other conditions that have not been diagnosed and it may cause an increased risk of stroke or heart attack,” the FDA said in the statement.

H. Rangula, director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, said the FDA is working with the FDA to develop an approved drug for the prevention and treatment of patients with heart disease and to help protect patients from heart disease.

The drug has been linked to a rare inherited eye condition known as retinal vascular disease, which affects middle-aged men, older women and women with heart disease. In addition, the FDA has warned the manufacturer that the drug may increase the risk of heart attack, stroke and death.

“The FDA has not yet approved the drug,” Dr. Rangula said.

“This is a matter of public record and it is an issue of public health,” he said.
